A B.A. in English with Middle and Secondary Education offers students the same skills as the non-licensure degree in English with the additional credential required to teach at the middle-or high-school level.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of English Middle/Secondary Education degree, students will:
- Practice critical reflection in the analysis and improvement of their teaching.
- Demonstrate a sound foundation of content knowledge in the subject areas they teach.
- Understand and implement best practices in their teaching.
- Demonstrate the dispositions critical to effective teaching.
- Practice responsive teaching that meets the diverse needs of all students in their classrooms.
- Collaborate effectively with stakeholders (e.g. parents, K-12 administrators, community members) to enhance student learning.
- Analyze works of literature and place them in context.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the conventions of genres.
- Identify distinct critical perspectives that enrich textual interpretation.
- Demonstrate ability in writing to show due regard for audience.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the grammar, mechanics, and conventions of standard English.

Program Required Courses
The English major with licensure includes a minimum of 40 credits in English (ENG), 24 credits of which must be in courses numbered 3000 or above. ENG 1110 and ENG 4440 do not count among the 40 ENG credits required for the major. Additional courses outside of English are required for licensure for a total of 96-97 credits, and are as follows:
